Gluten Free Cupcake?

Yeah. You read that right. We wanted to take a moment to remind and let everyone know of our Gluten-Free Cupcake. As a cafe and grocery we understand people have allergies. We also know that being a celiac isn’t easy – hence why we’ve created our Gluten Free Cupcake made with rice flour. It’s made with rice flower, and we think it is nearly an exact copy of our regular cupcake. It’s a dense, but somehow still light cake with warm vanilla flavor and of course topped with our buttercream frosting. There are many sweets and baked goods that those who have to avoid Gluten cannot have. Reward yourself (sans tummy rumble) with an amazingly tasty cupcake: ours!

Salted Caramel Chocolate Cupcake

When thinking about the deluge of possible cupcake flavors and mixings we thought we’d give our dear readers and followers a try at creating a cupcake. We’d pick a winner, make and create the cupcake idea from a dream into a real thing. With winning they’d receive a twelve case of their winning flavor, sharing their creation with their loved ones – bragging rights in hand. We received a myriad of entires with an amazing array of flavors, textures, and surprising combinations. The inspiring and incredible collection made it a real task to find a winner, but one stood out to us as an interesting and possible combination that would perk our interest as well as those of our customers.

The cupcake? An entry about salted caramel and chocolate mixed together in a combination we couldn’t ignore. Stacy L, a homemaker with a budding passion for food came up with the idea from her favorite gelato. She doesn’t label herself a ‘foodie’ but says that she likes to experience and expose her children to new foods. She’s joined a CSA this year to keep things interesting, worrying that her family “was eating the same 4 meals every week.” For Stacy, “from scratch” means you can control the kinds of things that go into the food, as well as putting yourself into the dishes – from start to finish – something she tires to do. She became a fan of Southport Grocery when pregnant and loved our “from scratch” style and use of “local, and artisan foods” from our bakery to the kitchen to the things we sell on the shelf. She also found our starters helpful when looking for a boost to good homemade food.

The cupcake itself is devised of great flavor proportions; starting with a dark chocolate cake with salty caramel poured over the finished cake, then frosted with our famous buttercream and topped with Himalayan sea salt and toffee bits. A layering of sweet and salty, contrasting on each level, your tongue is elevated to a lush land of lip-smacking luxury. Give ‘em a try; we love them and know you will too.

Know an ex-Chicagoan who’s got a birthday coming up? How about an far flung friend in need of cupcakes? Ship them a dozen of our famous cupcakes! That is right we ship our cupcakes to those who need their cupcake fix. Available in all vanilla, all chocolate, or half of each – they are sure to brighten up anyone’s day when a box of our cupcakes arrives at their doorstep. Let them sit for a bit (to defrost) and they will be just as good if they had walked in the store that day!

The cupcakes are made the day before they are shipped, frozen for shipping, packed in a special cupcake box to make sure they arrive in perfect order, and shipped overnight to their destination. The receivers not up to scarfing down a full dozen cupcakes? They can be kept frozen for up to two weeks. To enjoy, all they need is to sit for a few hours and thaw to perfection.

Yes, that is right – a Southport Grocery Cupcake Truffle. Who could possibly think of such a device of comfort and indulgence? None other than our favorite confectioner: Nicole from truffle truffle. What is a Southport Grocery Cupcake Truffle? Imagine for a moment our cupcakes: soft vanilla cake that melts in your mouth, the richness of buttercream frosting lighting all the right synapses. Now, pull that all inside a thick layering of milk, dark, or white chocolate. That’s Southport’s famous cupcake center, rolled in our buttercream frosting, enrobed in a shell of chocolate and top them off with a wide selection sprinkles. Mouth watering yet?

They are available now, $1.50 individually or $24 for 12 in a truffle truffle tin with Southport’s signature blue ribbon. Whoopie Pies – Maine’s ‘cupcake’

Whoopie pies …. a Maine tradition. Being from the Midwest and steeped in the cupcake world I can’t help but think of the whoopie pie as Maine’s version of the cupcake…comfort food! More like a cake than a pie or a cookie, two generous size cakes sandwiching fluffy white filling. And in Fall not only the traditional chocolate cake but pumpkin too. Visit Bread & Roses Bakery (246 Main Street) in Ogunquit Maine for a taste of the whoopie pie. Cupcakes for the Cure

On Saturday, June 7th & Sunday, June 8th, Southport Grocery and Cafe will be donating 50 cents of each cupcake sold to the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

Breast Cancer 3-Day is Komen for the Cure’s signature event wherein participants raise $2,200 and take part in a 3-day 60-mile walk in one of 14 U.S. cities, including Chicago.
