Our Potato Mash

Monday, December 8th, 2008

5 lbs. small red potatoes
2 cups sour cream
3 oz. unsalted butter
5 oz. white cheddar cheese
Salt & Pepper to taste

Rinse and clean potatoes before putting in a large pot. No need to peel them, the mash tastes better with them on! Add cold water to the pot, just covering the potatoes, and a dash of salt. Bring to a boil and cook for approx. 15 min. or until tender. Drain potatoes and while they are still hot, smash together with the sour cream, butter & cheddar cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Fall Menu?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

If we determined seasons solely by the weather, we might have to agree that Autumn came and went last week. All of a sudden it is Winter! However, the fact remains, that there are still
3 weeks until the last Fall holiday, Thanksgiving. That gives you plenty of time to try the New Fall Menu at Southport Grocery & Cafe.

For breakfast our menu takes a turn toward comfort. The Brisket & Gravy smothers house-smoked brisket gravy over a homemade biscuit and beneath fried eggs. Keeps you warm on cold Winter (read: Autumn) mornings.

As long as the leaves have fallen from the trees, it’s okay to eat gravy for breakfast!

When it’s cold outside, tuna salad doesn’t quite cut it. A Tuna Melt made with pan-seared albacore tuna sure does. Served straight from the oven and seaped with roasted red
pepper, green olive aioli & local butterkasse cheese, this delightful sandwich melts in your mouth.

What’s fresh? What’s local? These are the 2 main questions driving the changes in our seasonal menus. Whether it’s fresh root vegetables in our new Chop Salad
or local apples in our new Stuffed French Toast, it’s all Fall Menu fodder…

…even if it feels like Winter outside.

New Summer Menu Items

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

We just had the longest day of the year which means summer is in full swing! This gives you plenty of daylight to try some of our new summer menu items.

Our new Hot Dog is so good that the next time you’re at Wrigley Field you might be singing, “Take Me Out To Southport Grocery & Cafe.” A Paulina Meat Market Hot Dog with Home-Made Relish beats ketchup on a ballpark frank.

The revamped BLT ought to really be called NBLTPAACMCB. That’s short for Nueske Bacon & Lettuce & Tomato with Pulped Avocado, Apricot Compote, Mayo on Challah Bread.

This Bean Is NOT On The New Summer Menu

We’ve also added a seasonally fresh Lolla Rosa – Beet – Fennel Salad and ammended our Grilled Turkey & Roast Beef sandwiches.

We invite you to try some our new summer menu items because next thing you know it’ll be winter and we’ll be unveiling our new winter menu items while celebrating (read: bemoaning) the shortest day of the year.
