In Good Taste For A Good Cause

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Southport Grocery & Cafe is proud to team up with the Lynn Sage Foundation as they unroll “Chicago’s In Good Taste,” a Chicago-based breast cancer research initiative.

For the rest of the month, you may elect to add $1 to your bill at over 50 participating restaurants in support of the Lynn Sage Foundation.

The Lynn Sage Foundation seeks to ensure every penny raised on this project can be spent directly on breast cancer research. Your $1 donation will contribute to research
work being done at Northwestern University.

For more information please click on Lynn Sage Foundation

We invite you to wine and dine for a good cause.

Everyday Could Be Mother’s Day

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11th. But at Southport Grocery & Cafe, everyday could be Mother’s Day.

To begin with, we serve brunch seven days a week. And as we all know, brunch has been the foundation of Mother’s Day celebrations for more than a century.  It was invented because you can’t serve champagne with breakfast.

Southport Grocery & Cafe also specializes in gifts for mom. We can create custom gift basket from any of the goodies from our shelves. Let us know if mom has a Sweet Tooth.

If you’re not going to be in Chicago on Mother’s Day consider getting mom a gift certificate for another day. Bring her in on Tuesday or next month or in the fall because hey…everyday could be Mother’s Day.

The Easter Bunny Eats Grass…Why Not You?

Southport Grocery & Cafe has also created some Edible Easter Boxes ($6.50) of our very own. This limited supply is bursting with Jelly Bellies, Miniature Chocolate Bunnies &, of course, grass of the edible variety.

MOD Is In

Friday, February 29th, 2008

We just returned from the Fancy Food Show in San Diego with our bags and tummies stuffed with the latest trends and products in the world of gourmet food.

Our favorite was Modmix: the organic cocktail mixer.

With a nod to “mod” cocktail parties of the 1960s, Modmix harkens back to a time when barteners were mixologists & a certain British spy was ordering martinis “shaken not stirred.”

MOD…Modern Organic Drinks…Get it?

Modmix ($16.50) has the ability to transport you to another time and place. Add tequila to Citrus Margarita and suddenly you’re on the Mexican Riviera.
Add champagne to Lavender Lemon Drop and suddenly you’re on the Italian Riviera. Add vodka to French Martini and suddenly you’re…well you get the idea.

MOD is in! It’s SO in that we now use it in our mimosas ($8.00). Try one next time you’re in for brunch.

The People Have Spoken

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Sunday is our busiest day of the week. We’re chock full of late lunchers, early brunchers, and all-around hungry munchers. Unfortunately, by closing our doors at 3 o’clock,
we haven’t been able to accommodate everybody who wants to dine with us. Who are we to deny the demands of the people?!

That’s why we’re happy to announce that Southport Grocery & Cafe will be open until 4pm on Sundays with last seating at 3:45pm. That’s 4pm Central Standard Time

We hope to see you soon. By the way, our employees thank you for wanting to eat later rather than earlier……or this would be an email about us opening our doors at 7 am!

Sweets For Your Sweetheart

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. But, if chocolate is involved, the same route could be taken to a woman’s heart. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner,
Southport Grocery & Cafe is going to put that theory to the test.

For chocolate purists, Fran’s 10-piece sleeves of Chocolate Hearts ($11.50) are made from Pure Venezuelan Milk or Dark Chocolate and define elegance. For adventurous chocolate lovers,
Vosges Aphrodisiac Mini Bar Library Box ($24.00) offers an exotic assortment of chocolate bars.

A Library You Can Eat

The nice thing about chocolate is that you can dip just about anything in it. That’s the idea behind Anysetiers du Roy’s Fondue Au Chocolat ($14.95). These 7 oz. crocks can be heated up at home
to enjoy dipping in Chocolat Noir, Lait Gourmet & Lait Vanille. We’ve also bundled some of these Fondues with our homemade marshmallows and biscottis ($20.00). We’ll be preparing for Valentine’s Day just like any other holiday…by baking. For a limited time, we’ll be offering a box of Handmade Valentine’s Day Cookies ($16.50). Of course, chocolate will be well represented in this array.

Stock Up For the Winter

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Recipe for a Cold Winter: Take one part Windy City, two parts sub-Arctic temperatures, mix vigorously.

Southport Grocery & Cafe knows it’s cold outside. We also know that the best antidote is a bowl of hot soup. Our shelves are lined with the goods to get you started.

A soup is only as good as its stock. More Than Gourmet’s line of Beef, Vegetable & Chicken Stock ($5.25) are the best around. More Than Gourmet also makes Glaces from Duck, Chicken, Lamb,
Veggies & Seafood ($3-8.50)

Homemade soup doesn’t have to start from scratch. Let Cockwell & Company Gumbo Mix ($12.95) or Green Chile Stew ($11.95) give you a leg up. All you have to do is add the meat.
Canterbury Organics Mixes make soup making a cinch. Add Pumpkin to their Curried Pumpkin Soup Mix ($6.50). After The Feast Lentil Soup Mix ($6.50) requires your left-overs to create a scrumptious bowl.

Soup Bowls…Just Add Soup

Want to make soup the old-fashioned way? By heating it up? We offer our own made-from-scratch soups in the deli case (16 oz. for $5.00). The ultimate gourmet canned soups are Maggie & Mary’s
Chicken Dumpling, Pot Roast, Hungarian Mushroom, French Onion & Creamy Wild Rice ($7.00).

Have extra soup left over? No worries. Stick it in the freezer for the next cold day. No room in the freezer? No worries. Stick it outside on the porch.

“It’s Only Natural”

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Southport Grocery & Cafe has long been an advocate of eco-friendly food production and making meals from scratch. So, it’s only natural that we’d jump at the opportunity to be exculsive provider
of salads, sandwiches and baked goods at The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

You can find our featured fresh-made items in the gift shop. Perfect for a quick bite while at the museum or if you’re hungry and find yourself in the middle of Lincoln Park.
