Southport Grocery heads to the Big Apple

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

When most people hear the words “New York City” they think of a skyscraper packed skyline, bright broadway lights, fancy restaurants and sidewalks spilling over with hipsters and tourists loaded down with shopping bags. Not me. My mind immediately jumps to NYC’s enormous convention center, the Jacob K. Javits Center, which I’m pretty sure takes up Manhattan’s entire west side. And why do I think of this massive building? Because it is the home to this summer’s NAST Fancy Food Show….the place where we find many of our grocery products. The show is this weekend.

One of the highlights of the show is judging for the sofi awards. What are the sofi awards…a honor given to truly outstanding specialty foods: the best of the best. We will be tasting everything from cheese to chocolate and everything in between. Winners are annnouced at the end of the weekend. Stay tuned for what we bring to Southport Grocery.

Some finalists that we already carry:

  • Terra Medi Bruschetta with Chopped Olives and Almonds
  • Yarra Valley Dairy Marinated Feta
  • Poco Dolce Aztec Chili Bittersweet Chocolate Tiles
  • Creamnut Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Clusters
  • Barefoot Contessa Lemon Curd
  • Elena’s Insalata Della Casa Dressing
  • Elena’s Mediterranean Stew Steamng Broth

New Summer Menu Items

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

We just had the longest day of the year which means summer is in full swing! This gives you plenty of daylight to try some of our new summer menu items.

Our new Hot Dog is so good that the next time you’re at Wrigley Field you might be singing, “Take Me Out To Southport Grocery & Cafe.” A Paulina Meat Market Hot Dog with Home-Made Relish beats ketchup on a ballpark frank.

The revamped BLT ought to really be called NBLTPAACMCB. That’s short for Nueske Bacon & Lettuce & Tomato with Pulped Avocado, Apricot Compote, Mayo on Challah Bread.

This Bean Is NOT On The New Summer Menu

We’ve also added a seasonally fresh Lolla Rosa - Beet - Fennel Salad and ammended our Grilled Turkey & Roast Beef sandwiches.

We invite you to try some our new summer menu items because next thing you know it’ll be winter and we’ll be unveiling our new winter menu items while celebrating (read: bemoaning) the shortest day of the year.

Our new website is now live!

We are very excited about our new website…check it out!  One more way to experience Southport Grocery…without a wait.  As the summer progresses check back to find recipes, entertaining ideas and more.

Cupcakes for the Cure

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

On Saturday, June 7th & Sunday, June 8th, Southport Grocery and Cafe will be donating 50 cents of each cupcake sold to the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

Breast Cancer 3-Day is Komen for the Cure’s signature event wherein participants raise $2,200 and take part in a 3-day 60-mile walk in one of 14 U.S. cities, including Chicago.
For more information, visit the Susan G. Komen website www.08.the3day.org

Our cupcake is the signature item at Southport Grocery & Cafe. It is only appropriate that we utilize it to support Komen for the Cure’s signature event.
