Stock Up For the Winter

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Recipe for a Cold Winter: Take one part Windy City, two parts sub-Arctic temperatures, mix vigorously.

Southport Grocery & Cafe knows it’s cold outside. We also know that the best antidote is a bowl of hot soup. Our shelves are lined with the goods to get you started.

A soup is only as good as its stock. More Than Gourmet’s line of Beef, Vegetable & Chicken Stock ($5.25) are the best around. More Than Gourmet also makes Glaces from Duck, Chicken, Lamb,
Veggies & Seafood ($3-8.50)

Homemade soup doesn’t have to start from scratch. Let Cockwell & Company Gumbo Mix ($12.95) or Green Chile Stew ($11.95) give you a leg up. All you have to do is add the meat.
Canterbury Organics Mixes make soup making a cinch. Add Pumpkin to their Curried Pumpkin Soup Mix ($6.50). After The Feast Lentil Soup Mix ($6.50) requires your left-overs to create a scrumptious bowl.

Soup Bowls…Just Add Soup

Want to make soup the old-fashioned way? By heating it up? We offer our own made-from-scratch soups in the deli case (16 oz. for $5.00). The ultimate gourmet canned soups are Maggie & Mary’s
Chicken Dumpling, Pot Roast, Hungarian Mushroom, French Onion & Creamy Wild Rice ($7.00).

Have extra soup left over? No worries. Stick it in the freezer for the next cold day. No room in the freezer? No worries. Stick it outside on the porch.

“It’s Only Natural”

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Southport Grocery & Cafe has long been an advocate of eco-friendly food production and making meals from scratch. So, it’s only natural that we’d jump at the opportunity to be exculsive provider
of salads, sandwiches and baked goods at The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

You can find our featured fresh-made items in the gift shop. Perfect for a quick bite while at the museum or if you’re hungry and find yourself in the middle of Lincoln Park.

A 2nd Southport Grocery Storefront? The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is dedicated to inspiring people to learn about and care for nature and the environment.

“Your Table Is Ready”

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Those are the 4 words every guest wants to hear upon arriving at Southport Grocery & Cafe. On a busy weekend morning, these 4 words sound even sweeter.

Waiting for a table can be frustrating as the aroma of stuffed french toast, the din of clinking coffee mugs and the sight of smiling, seated customers conspire to taunt you.

We don’t want you to be on the outside looking in…
That’s why on weekends, we recommend arriving before 10am. And to beat the weekday lunch rush, arrive either side of our busiest time Noon-2pm. Follow these rules of thumb and you’ll hear 4 better words…
“Sit anywhere you like.”
